Historic WonderviewTheatre

Flinders Parade, Victor Harbor

Built in 1923 and demolished in 1990

Victor Harbor Youth Club initially began as the Victor Harbor Physical Culture Club with 40 boys and young men aged 7 - 25.

There was a significant need, particularly post-war as a means of;

·      community engagement

·      to help returned service people connect through movement

 In 1947 they moved into the Mount Breckan gymnasium built buy the RAAF. They bought all the gymnasium equipment for a bargain price of 50 pounds.

The local girls soon felt that they should be able to join in the fun, and the Victor Harbor Girls Club had its first meeting in the Congregational Hall on 15 June 1950.

Eight months later the two clubs amalgamated as the Victor Harbor Youth Club with the objective of providing opportunities for recreation and encouraging ‘physical, social and intellectual development’ as a basis of good citizenship.

In March 1966 the club bought the old Wonderview Theatre for 7,500 pounds.

At that point there were estimated to be about 75 members but the new facility gave fresh impetus to the club and the membership of both boys and girls started to rise again. By the end of the 1960s the club was flourishing once more.

VHYC were incorporated in 1966

VHYC sold their property Wonderview in Victor Harbor 1985

Membership at that point is said to have exceeded 300.

A proposal was put forward to construct a building ‘the Community Centre’ on land provided by the Minister. It would contain facilities and be operative as per conditions in the Indenture.

VHYC made a contribution of $150,000 for the cost of the erection of ‘the Community Centre’ in 1985.

The legal indenture outlines the proportions of investment as follows;

·      Victor Harbor High School council 5/9

·      VH Town Band 1/9

·      Victor Harbor Youth Club 3/9
